CD Review – Cruel Summer

Cruel Summer starts out surprisingly catchy, and there are some good hooks in most the songs, but every song features the same basic structure and form, and the album seems overly repetitive by the fourth or fifth song.

The biggest qualm with the album is that it’s functionally one song about being stoned and drunk in the club, driving Maybachs and Murcielagos, having more money than you know what to do with, and stealing girlfriends. I mean, if you want to write a song about that, go for it, but an entire album’s worth of this material is pretty unimaginative.

“Higher” is for the most part a pretty terrible song, but the end features a bunch of harmonies, which sound pretty interesting, but it also sounds like a vocal jazz group singing about how they’re “higher than a motherfucker”.

But the album’s best line comes in Kanye West’s verse during “The One”, wherein he says (because he’s not really rapping but not really singing either) this gem is the, “Best way to describe my position/Is at the helm/Best way to describe my new whip/Yeeeooooooowwwwmmm”.

Cruel Summer is more or less what you’d expect from the G.O.O.D. Music collective. It’s a caricature of hip-hop; I have more/am better/sleep with more girls than you.
