Cougars women’s basketball team boasts 6-0 Canada West record

Women’s Basketball

Regina’s season remains perfect with a record of 6-0 thanks to a pair of Canada West road victories over the Trinity Western University Spartans last weekend.

The Cougars beat Trinity Western 72-51 (1-7) on Friday and topped them 74-47 the next day.

On Friday, Joanna Zalesiak had 16 points and six assists for Regina, which also got 13 points from Anne Mercer and Carly Graham and 10 points from Lindsay Ledingham.

Ledingham led the way on Saturday with 19 points for the Cougars. Zalesiak chipped in with 12 points and Gabrielle Gheyssen had 10 for Regina.

Regina is second in the conference behind the 8-0 University of Victoria Vikes. Victoria welcomes in Regina this weekend for a pair of games.

Football

The Rams season is over, but they got some consolation last weekend as seven players were named Canada West all-stars.'

Leading the offensive selections was Adrian Charles. Charles, the lone unanimous selection, led the conference in rushing with 972 yards and nine touchdowns. Slotback Brenden Owens was the other Cougar selected on offence, racking up 596 receiving yards and five touchdowns.

On defence, middle linebacker Bruce Anderson (39½ tackles, four fumble recoveries), defensive lineman Akiem Hicks (29 total tackles, two forced fumbles), cornerback Jamir Walker (five interceptions) and safety Matt Yausie (31½ tackles, one sack) were selected for Regina.

Punter Chris Bodnar was the lone special teams player selected for the Rams. He averaged 41 yards a punt this season.

Men’s Volleyball

The Cougars were swept by Trinity Western in a pair of Canada West games last weekend at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health and Sport

On Friday, Regina fell 24-26, 25-16, 25-23, 25-21 to the Spartans (5-1). Regina took the first set, but proceeded to drop the next three to come up short. Jamie Wilkins led the Cougars in kills with 16 kills, Leon Dyck tallied 11 kills and seven digs and Matt Hender earned 31 assists and seven digs.

The next day, Trinity Western blanked the Cougars 25-17, 27-25, 25-19. In the second set, Regina boasted a 23-17 lead, which they eventually relinquished. Dyck notched 10 kills for the Cougars, while Joel Colter recorded five blocks.

Regina is tied for second-last in the conference at 0-4. On Friday and Saturday, the Cougars host Thompson Rivers University Wolf Pack (2-2). The game on Friday is at 8 p.m. and the game on Saturday is at 6:15 p.m. Both games are at the CKHS.

Women’s Volleyball

Regina lost two Canada West games to Trinity Western last weekend at the CKHS

The Cougars fell 25-16, 25-17, 23-25, 25-12 to the Spartans (6-0) on Friday and lost 25-18, 22-25, 25-17, 19-25, 15-10 to them on Saturday.

On Friday, Kaitlyn Hughes had 12 kills and nine digs for Regina, which also got 37 assists from Tiffany Herman and 15 digs from Rebecca Rink. The next day, Meagan Onstad had 18 kills and 17 digs for Regina, while Kaitlyn Hughes added 14 kills and 14 digs and Tiffany Herman had 50 assists and 13 digs.

The Cougars, tied for sixth in the conference at 1-3), host Thompson Rivers (0-4) this weekend at the CKHS. Regina plays on Friday at 6:15 p.m. and Saturday at 8 p.m.

Men’s Basketball

The Cougars saw their perfect record broken last weekend as they lost a pair of Canada West road games to Trinity Western.

On Friday, the Spartans (6-2) topped Regina 100-60. Lynn Gee nailed three three-pointers for Regina and led the team with 12 points. Paul Gareau was close behind for the Cougars with 11 points. In the game, Regina was out-rebounded 42-18.

With the losses, Regina dropped to fifth in the conference at 4-2. They head out on the road to face Victoria (2-4) in a pair of games this weekend.

Women’s Hockey

Regina dropped a pair of Canada West road games to Alberta last weekend.

Rianne Wight notched the lone goal for Regina on Friday, a game in which they dropped 8-1 to Alberta (6-3-1). Goaltender info was unavailable at source.

The Cougars sit tied for fifth at 4-5-1. They host the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns this Friday and Saturday. Both games are at 7 p.m. at the Co-operators Centre.
