Golden Globes 2021

The beginning of awards season

As February comes to a close, so starts the 2021 film awards season. This past weekend, film fanatics, casual viewers and people with nothing better to do because there’s a pandemic, were able to see the ceremony for the coveted Golden Globe. An award so barely sought after that at least one person nominated in each category doesn’t bother to attend. This is, of course, a comedic over generalization and in no way should be taken as fact. It’s okay though, because this time they have a reason with COVID-19 and because of COVID-19, first responders and essential workers were instead a part of the honourings.

Some slight digs at the Globes aside, this 2021 ceremony had important conversations regarding the association that puts on the awards. Yes, Tina Fey specifically didn’t pull any punches as she dived straight into the Hollywood Foreign Press Association lack of inclusivity, stating; “the Hollywood Foreign Press Association is made up of around 90 international no black journalists”, as well saying that; “inclusivity is important and their are no black members of the Hollywood Foreign Press (HFPA), I realize, HFPA, maybe you guys didn’t get the memo because your workplace is the backbooth of a French McDonalds, but you gotta change that.”

Moving to the actual awards and winners themselves, we’ll start things off with “Best Original Song” and “Best Original Score”, which went to “Io Sì (Seen)”, performed by Diane Warren for The Life Ahead and Pixar’s Soul, respectively. I can’t speak for The Life Ahead, but Pixar’s Soul was very deserving of this award and I would be shocked if it doesn’t end up winning the Academy Award for it as well.

Next is Best Supporting Actress and Best Supporting Actors, the first of which went to Jodie Foster and I couldn’t have been more excited. Jodie Foster is an absolute masterclass of an actress and it was thrilling to see her win for her role in The Mauritanian. The same can also be said of Daniel Kaluuya, who won for his role in Judas and the Black Messiah, which, if you haven’t seen it, I would highly recommend.

Continuing, we have the Best Actress and Best Actor in a Comedy or Musical. This year, the winner was Rosamund Pike in I Care A Lot, who finally won after having been nominated twice. Other nominees include Michelle Phiefer, Kate Hudson and Maria Bakalova. Best Actor went to Sacha Baron Cohen for Borat 2, a film I don’t think anybody would have guessed to have the cultural relevance that it does.

Following Musical or Comedy, we have Best Actress and Best Actor in a Drama. The win of Best Actress this year went to Andra Day in The United States vs. Billie Holiday, as well, Best Actor went to Chadwick Boseman, who tragically passed away this year, for Ma Rainy’s Black Bottom.

Best Director went to Chloé Zhao for Nomadland, which was a huge win as Zhao became the first woman of Asian descent to win the award. As well, Zhao’s film, Nomadland went on to win Best Motion Picture Drama. As for Best Motion Picture Musical or Comedy, that went to Borat 2 in what, again, was a mind-boggling win considering the first one’s subject matter. Of course, as mentioned beforehand, the relevance of the sequel was much more deserving of an award.
