With music, apps, and drinks, Welcome Week is bigger than ever at the U of R

It’s Welcome Week once again at the University of Regina, and the events are already in full swing. The Carillon spoke with Lynn Barber, the URSU Vice President of External Affairs, about how Welcome Week is about more than standing in line for your parking pass.

“A big highlight for us this year, which will take place for the first time ever, is our Music Festival on Friday night. Our local DJ’s will still be playing all day, but on Friday we are continuing it into the evening and following these up with a few special guests we have brought in just for Welcome Week… We have Wolf Saga coming in from Ontario, followed by The Gaff from Saskatoon, and The Funk Hunters from Vancouver. This is an all ages event, but the beer gardens will also be

open to those students who are 19+ until 11pm. This is also followed by Dollar Draft in The Owl that evening.”

“Although the [Welcome Week] schedule may look daunting,” Barber adds, “we made sure to jam pack it so that we can be sure all students are able to participate between their busy schedules.”

This year’s Welcome Week features a companion-app, which is free to download for all students. Barber describes the program as “a one-stop shop for all things Orientation and Welcome Week.” Its features include a full calendar of events from Res Move-In all the way until the end of Welcome Week… a campus map, contacts, to-do list, as well as a direct link to social media.”

The Owl is set to host Trivia Night on Wednesdays again this year, despite a brief cancellation last March after a comment deemed inappropriate prompted the former hosts to resign.

“[URSU is] very excited to announce our new Trivia Night hosts are the Smarty Pints,” Barber told The Carillon. “This is a group that has been very successful and well-received in the community, and we are delighted to have them on campus.”

When asked if there had been any policy changes made to prevent another incident, Barber declined to comment.

Other official Welcome Week events include the United Way BBQ on the Green (Thurs. 12:30-3), a Casino Royale Cabaret (Thurs. 10-2), and Dollar Draft Night at The Owl (Fri. 9:30-2). Unofficial events include going to your first class with a hangover, and standing in line for your parking pass.
