Dans mes premières années à l’université, j’ai pris des cours en français et ces cours étaient mes cours préférés. Les profs étaient tellement gentils et étaient de bonne humeur. Mon enseignant de français 101 nous a parlé, à nous étudiants, du certificat. Je trouvais ce programme très intéressant parce que je voulais apprendre plus de français. J’étais en immersion pendant toutes mes années à école élémentaire, mais j’ai oublié beaucoup de français. L’entrevue pour le certificat était difficile pour moi parce que j’avais oublié beaucoup de mots simples en français, alors je n'étais pas capable de répondre aux questions. Je comprenais les questions, mais je n’étais pas capable d'y répondre. C’était une expérience très gênante pour moi à cause de ça. Néanmoins, j’ai réussi l’entrevue.

Le premier jour du certificat, j’étais un peu nerveux. J’ai entendu dire que le programme était très intense. Mais, les premiers jours n’étaient pas trop difficiles. Nous avons fait des exercices assez faciles. Les cours se passaient presque toute la journée, mais l’environnement de la salle de classe était très reposant. Dans les cours du certificat, il n’y a jamais une question stupide. La plupart du temps, il n’y a pas trop de devoirs. Chaque nuit nous avons des lectures et des devoirs à faire. De temps en temps nous avons beaucoup de devoirs, mais si les profs trouvent que nous sommes trop angoissés par les devoirs, ils nous donnent plus de temps pour finir. Tous les profs sont très gentils et ils nous aident beaucoup. Si quelqu’un a des problèmes avec un sujet nous passons plus de temps sur ce sujet. Il y a seulement neuf personnes dans le certificat, donc si nous avons besoin d’aide supplémentaire les profs sont là pour nous. Il y a aussi des tuteurs qui peuvent vous aider. Si j'ai des problèmes avec un sujet, il y a toujours quelqu’un qui peut m’aider.

Maintenant, il y a six mois que j’ai commencé le certificat en français langue seconde. Mon français s'est beaucoup amélioré au cours de cette période. Au début quand nous avons regardé des films en français nous avons eu besoin de sous-titres, mais maintenant nous n'avons plus besoin. Ma prononciation s'est améliorée et je peux comprendre le français très facilement. Il y a des jours où, je peux parler le français sans fautes, mais il y a toujours des jours où j’ai des difficultés. Il y a toujours des parties de la langue que je peux améliorer, mais maintenant c’est beaucoup plus facile pour moi. Avant le certificat, je détestais faire des présentations parce que je suis très timide. Nous avons fait beaucoup de présentations et maintenant je suis plus à l'aise pour faire des présentations. De plus, je trouve que mon anglais s'est amélioré aussi. Quand nous apprenons le français nous obtenons beaucoup de vocabulaire et nous apprenons les traductions d’anglais. Pour moi le certificat sert à améliorer mon français et mon anglais. Maintenant quand je travaille, je peux parler aux clients en français et parce que je parle le français, il y a plus de possibilités pour moi.

J’aime beaucoup le programme du certificat ! Ces six mois sont les plus amusants de mon temps à l’université. Maintenant j’ai huit amis avec qui je peux parler français pour ne pas le perdre. Pendant les cours, on fait beaucoup de travail, mais nous nous amusons beaucoup aussi. Si vous vouliez apprendre ou améliorer votre français je recommanderais le certificat en français langue seconde. Vous allez beaucoup apprendre et vous épanouir en même temps.

An unforgettable experience

In my first couple years at university I took a few French classes. These were my favourite classes to go to. The professors were really nice and helpful. I first heard about the Certificate in French as a Second Language in my French 101 class. I found this programme interesting because I wanted to further improve my French. I was in French immersion throughout elementary school but I had forgotten a lot of it. The interview for the certificate was difficult for me because I forgot a lot of simple words in French; therefore I was unable to properly reply to the questions. I could understand the questions I just could not answer them. It was an embarrassing experience but I managed to pass.

The first day of the certificate I was a little bit nervous. I had heard that the program can be intense and after the interview I was not too confident in myself. However the first few days were fairly easy, we did basic exercises and asked each other basic questions. The classes took up most of the day, but the class environment was very relaxed. In the certificate there is no stupid question. Most of the time the workload was manageable. Every night we had reading and homework to do, but it only took a few hours maximum to finish. From time to time we would get a lot of homework, but if our professors found us stressing out from a large workload they would usually give us more time to finish the assignments and presentations. The professors who teach the certificate are very nice and helpful. If someone would run into problems with a subject they would always take the time to make sure they understood. This year there is only nine of us in the program so if any of us needed help the professors would always be there to help. There are also tutors available throughout the week to help us with assignments. Whenever I needed help with someone, there was always somewhere there willing to help.

Now, six months after beginning the certificate program I have found that my French has drastically improved. Back in September when we watched a movie I always needed subtitles to understand what the characters were saying, but now I can watch a movie without subtitles and still understand what is going on. My pronunciation has also really improved. However some days I find it somewhat difficult to speak in French but other days I speak French as if it is my first language. Before the program I used to absolutely hate doing presentations because I am a fairly shy person. But now after having doing a lot of presentations I find myself much more comfortable speaking in front of people. In class, when we learned new words to expand our vocabulary we also learned the English translation. I have found learning the translations helped expand my vocabulary in English as well. For me, the program has improved not only my French but also my English. Now when I am at work I can speak to the customers in French, and being able to speak French has opened up many more job opportunities.

I have really enjoyed the program – these last six months has been the most fun I have had at university! I now have eight friends I can speak French with, which will help me retain everything we have learned. We have done a lot of work in the program but we have also had a lot of fun. If you are interested in improving your French or learning French I strongly recommend the Certificate in French as a Second Language. You will learn a lot but you will also have a lot of fun.
